Caused by a virus, currently there is no cure, however, treatments are available to remove the warts.
Transferred from one person to another by skin touching skin.
Symptoms include:
- Cauliflower-shaped lumps on the genitals or anus.
- Can appear internally on the cervix or inside the vagina.
- May be itchy but not painful.
- Warts will develop 1-3 months after infection.
Virus is extremely common, someone can have the virus and never produce a wart but still pass the virus to others.
Other minor skin disorders often mistaken for warts.
An examination by a doctor or nurse will identify active warts. (See Sexual Health Services.)
Treatments are available to remove warts but may occur again in the future.
No long-term complications.
Unfortunately, condoms will not always prevent this virus being transmitted, but will protect against other, more serious viruses, such as, HIV.
